Election 2026: ask your candidates

New Zealanders vote on 7 November, and the people standing in your electorate want to hear what matters to you.

New Zealand does not yet have a dedicated law or one joined-up system to protect vulnerable adults and all adults at risk, and an estimated 75% of elder abuse cases are never reported.

Before you vote, ask the candidates in your area, whatever their party, one simple question: will you support a law that protects adults at risk from abuse, exploitation and neglect?

You can email them, call their office or ask at a meet the candidates event. Tell them why this matters to you, mention our draft Adult Safeguarding Bill and ask for a reply. Advance voting starts on 26 October, so the sooner you ask the better.

We do not support or oppose any party or candidate. We only ask that every candidate hears from the people they hope to represent.

How you can take action

  • Contact your local MP to write a letter and say:
“I support a legislative change to protect vulnerable adults. Please refer to the Vulnerable Adults NZ website for the draft legislation that I support.”

  • Make a donation to support our work (coming soon).

  • Share your story on social media and tag our website.
